Check with AviCodec if you're missing a video Codec.
Just open the AVI File you downloaded and check the Video codec. Click the button next to it, to get to the codecs website and download and install it.

Its possible that you do not have the latest DirectX release. Dont go to the directX page, go to http://www.filehippo.com/ every 2 months for the latest release of directX. The current release is DirectX 9.0c, February 2007 Edition, which each release comes with new things added or fixed in it.
