anyone know what a good cam for a stock 307 2 barrell carb nova motor? and I may put a aluminum intake on it with a 650 Holley carb..electronic distributor..just a good cam ot give it a little more power and not have to replace valve springs or modify the motor or heads..maybe a 70 z/28 cam? too much?

I own a shop, and build a lot of engines. I can tell you that if you change the cam from stock to a higher lift, you will need better valve springs. Even the Z-28 cam will require better springs to keep the lifters from banging off the exit end of the lift. The best route to go is to purchase a cam & valve springs in a set from Crane, and get what is known as a 3/4 race cam. It has a 450/450 lift and sounds good too. If you must buy a Z-28 type grind, then do get the set with the springs too. One can change the springs without removing the heads with a pump up adapter that is made to keep air pressure on the cylinder, thus keeping the valves from dropping down while you change the springs. I have found it is critical to the performance of an engine to match the cam & valve springs. I have seen people change the cam and not the springs, and it actually slowed the car down. If I were you I would call Crane, and have a long chat with them about what it is you are trying to acheive, and they can point you in the best direction. You don't want any suprises, do you? Piston to valve clearence becomes an issue, push rod geomentry, spring bind, and premature valve seal failure are all factors when changing your cam.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Depends on what year the 307 was made. Late 60's is different than the more 1970's versions. But, remember, 307's are like the 305's, not a lot of power can be brought out of them. There were just a V-8 GM used to lure consumers to think they had a lot of power. But, the 307 engine is a much easier and much more fun engine to have than the GM 305.
Keep the 307 and work on it. Check with Summit Auto racing or Jegs.

I would go about one step above a R.V.--towing cam------ which would be about like the z-28 cam---would definatly help----the 307 does'nt have alot of power--
