honestly, it's a nice ability but not vital. I had a professor for one of my art major courses that couldnt draw(she taught page layouts for Quark Xpress). When you plan your work, as long as you know how to draw boxes and label what you plan (even if you make swiggly representations of what goes where), it's fine. Anyone who tells you drawing ability is 100% needed is an idiot. What you do need to know is photoshop, illustrator, quark/indesign/dreamweaver,flash, etc

People who do graphic design and have no drawing abilities will tell you it is not important all. But it's important: I'd say a 20%. Even though graphic software aids you, you still benefit from being able to make correct and understandable sketches. And of course, being able to handle illustrations can bring an extra income.

People who design but don't have drawing skills sometime are not able to discover when a picture composition/lighting they use is not correctly done, for example.

I don't know about graphic designers, but I design web pages and I can't draw at all. On the computer, I can re-create what I see in my head. On paper, no way!

Graphic designers... very important. I mean, you design graphics. You should at least know how to sketch. Web page designers don't need to know how to draw technical things, but they should know at least the idea of space and how tables and layouts come together.
