You're exactly right. You hold "alt" and type in a number on the num pad, usually a 3 or 4 digit number. There's an easier way, however, if you're using Microsoft Word. You can go to the "Insert" menu and click "Symbol." A window should pop up with all kinds of symbols in it from which to choose. Hope this helps.

Each application has it's own way of accessing different font sets. If you are a Microsoft Word user for instance, you can choose Insert > Symbol and choose a special character. Wingdings and other fonts have a huge variety of different characters.

If you select a character and then choose Format > Font, you can change the font set, size, color and other characteristics of that character.

Microsoft has a feature that allows you to type (c) for instance and this will instantly turn into the © symbol.

You can accomplish this in other applications, but you may need to read the manual to discover how this works.

I'm not familiar with the other special characters you're looking for.

And assuming you're using Windows XP (Or any other version to my knowledge):
Start> Accessories> System Tools> Character Map.

Hope I was of some help.
