I've seen several new car commercials and they call them crossovers. How are they different from SUVs or sedans?

Crossovers have a car frame or a unibody system. Historically, most of the big SUV's have had a truck frame.

Crossover is a term that auto makers are using to get you away from the now poor selling SUV's. In reality it is a station wagon that looks like a small SUV. Take for instance the new Jeep Compass, what a joke. Four wheel drive is a option. The thing is like the Toyota RAV 4. A SUV for wimps.
Like before, a crossover is really a station wagon, or just a taller car. Take your choice. Besides, most SUV's do not carry anymore people than a four door sedan. Most people driving them don't even take them off road. They add all of the off road things and never use it. The SUV never gets dirty and stays on the pavement. Most SUV's are "Mall Rate" or "Soccer Mom Rated"
What a shame.
