So I get all the way through my homework and I don't understand the last question.

For the function f(x) = 1/2x = 2, find the value of x for which f(x) = x.

I'm pretty sure it's an easy problem, I just don't understand the question. Thank you.

Yup it's a very easy question. Sometimes we just make things more complicated than they should be.

Pretty much what the question is saying is when does f(x)=x when f(x)=2? In other words, when does 1/2x=2? Well as long as you've passed your preliminary algebra that should be pretty easy to do.

Just times each side by two or divide each side by 1/2 (same effect) and you'll get x isolated.

Your final answer is x=4.

f(x) = (1/2)x + 2

That's what I'm going to assume

To find the values of x for which f(x) = x, just equate them and solve for x.

f(x) = x

(1/2)x + 2 = x

Move everything with an x to the left hand side, and everything else,

(1/2)x - x = -2

x(1/2 - 1) = -2

x(1/2 - 2/2) = -2
x(-1/2) = -2

Multiplying both sides by -2, we get

x = 4

if the equation is 1/(2x) = 2
x= 1/4

if the equation is (1/2)x = 2
x= 8

since you probably copied the equation straight out of the book, I'd go with the first equation.
