women are generally, by nature, materialistic. they tend to not be satisfied solely by just who they are. so they compensate with material possessions. and a diamond, being the "world's most precious gem" is definately a big score. men, on the other hand, are driven to having an ever-faithful companion. they're nature is to be the ''head-of-household" or the "man in charge". a dog is obedient, faithful, and protective and they for a genuine bond.

The best answer that I can give for this question is, women have always thought of a man as a dog anyway, so why not have the dog be his best friend. After all, don't they say that birds of a feather flock together.
Also the reason that diamonds are a woman's best friend is because most women have stars sparkling in their eyes at all times. They always think that they are always hard as nails yet the most beautiful people on this earth. This is usually us men's fault because for putting them up on a pedestal.

I have always understood that by saying a dog is "man's" best friend, it is referring to "mankind". It would be more politically correct to say they are people's best friend. As far as diamonds being a girl's best friend, I don't believe that either. In my opinion, makeup is a girls's best friend.

becos guys need someone who doesnt nag at him but appears excited when seeing him (which gals cannot satisfy this)
while gals need sparkling diamond to compliment her and complete her look (which guys cannot fulfill that)
