well, I've been told India is the world's largest democracy, so yes, it is. However it is not functioning very well when so many people are starving, homeless, orphans, living in poverty etc. I was there in Jan for a couple weeks and it was amazing to see everything, but the people are so oppressed by the caste system, its maddening. Everyone is equal and the caste system is so harmful and hurtful to teach otherwise! Instead of teaching about how inferior a person is, the government should teach the people how to rise above the poverty and send more children to school!

Yes, India is a true democracy.

But, the majority of the people give preference to their individual benefit rather than the national interest.

This mentality of the people will change only when huge calamity strikes our country and everybody are affected by it.

It is in formative stage and we are still evolving. Politicians exploit the caste, religion for dividing the people for their personal gains.Democracy is the worst form of government, but best amongst the various systems of governance discovered so far.

I would not say that India has the perfect democratic system but India does have an extremely secular government, something other democracies failed to achieve.
