I'm trying to hook up my cable internet myself, but it doesn't show a cable connection-what are we doing wrong?

not sure what you're working with but...

I'll assume you have your network card installed and drivers running ok. If you're not sure then double check network interface card in the device manager.

then you run the cable coming into the house through a splitter ( one end to your tv box / other end to the modem). If you got more than one box it's best to split first going to the modem and then add additional splitter on the coax going to the boxes.

Then you run your rj-45 ethernet wire (looks like telephone wire with a larger jack)from the modem to your network card (not sure if you're using a pci card or if you have integrated but either way there should be an rj-45 port on the back of your puter)

If you got a router somewhere in the middle you simply run the ethernet off the modem into the router and then run to each computer either wireless or with additional ethernet wire.

Do a quick reboot and see if you pull an ip address.
command prompt. Type: ipconfig /renew

You said you Believe both THink pads have a network card..goodie... now you have to set up a LAN (Local Area Network).... using your cable connection. linksys is a division of cisco, global leader in Wireless and Ethernet networking, and most common of all. Buy a linksys ROUTER ... along with 1-2 short cables Connect your modem with your router, and router to ONE computer Install the Linksys Router (set password if u want, and such) After installation, linksys will run a test and detect for internet connection... If at any point you get lost, always follow directions from your Linksys Router CD package.

Call your Cable Provider.

They may have to enable the connection first. You also have to call them and give them the Cable Modem ID so they can provision the line for your modem.

well...for starters make sure
you're using a modem you received from the cable company (or one they specifically said you can use)
The power and coax are correctly plugged in
There isn't a "standby" button on the modem that accidentally got pushed

other than that...call the cable company for over-the-phone support.

Cable must be hooked up to house first.

Are you using the installation CD for the modem? You have to have that and the password from your cable provider.. If not, nothing will work right.
