You probably can not break the lease because of it. Make sure you take extra precautions to make it safe. Buy sticks to put down on your sliding door. Make sure it fits tight. Also depending on what kind of windows you have, you can get sticks for them too, or nail them so they only open so far. Make sure you have dead bolts, and bright lights for outside. Ask the manager to provide some of these things, they may agree (or even decide to let you break the lease, if they don't want to bother with all that). Ask them if they will install censor motion lights for outside your sliding door.
Good luck, I hope all works out well for you. Be safe.

Well, to be honest. The landlord may find that you do not have a legitimate reason to break the lease. (I know I would feel compelled to). But what you can do is first, buy some dead-bolts and get them installed. Next. Make sure you put a thick stick to stop your slider from being able to be opened if the person manages to bust the slider lock. Get some non see-through curtains for your slider. Then get yourself a dog. Hopefully pets are ok in your apartment. If not, then sneak one in. I would. For my own safety...most definitely. But, you could try talking to your landlord and see how he/she could beef up the security. Sorry this happened. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Not unless the property management fails to do the basics such as put up adequate outdoor lighting or fence in the property. It is dangerous everywhere. Go to your local firing range and ask for a used target with holes in it perhaps in the head and chest area and tape it to your back door with a note to would be intruders as to what lies beyond the door.
Buy an alarm, make sure you have adequate locks on your doors and windows. Leave a light on when you leave. Ask your property manager if you can break your lease. I hate living on the ground floor. Never could understand why most people prefer it.

If I were you I installed Brinks or ADT which they are home security systems that protect you and get windows that let you see out and the people from outside couldn't see you and change the doors to make sure they are strong, and then buy a Gun as a self protections.

You may be able to talk to the management. You can also be 'very slightly' manipulative if they say no - but you have to be careful not to phrase it to sound like a threat or blackmail. If they say no, just aloofly say "I understand, you know, I have a good idea, I think we should make people aware of this in case he comes back. Maybe we should post flyers - or even call the papers to get this out?" - they will not want that bad press, then you can ask them to reconsider their 'no'.

Hi,
Your situation does not sound like a good one. I read articles and responses on the websites below. It seems that there are not a lot good reasons you can have to be able to break a lease.
Good luck and stay safe.
