If you want to check whether the earth is 4 billion years old you will have to get a degree in astrophysics and crosscheck data collected by other scientists over many years. It's a little more effort than dipping your finger in wet paint. I also submit that the guys who say the earth is 4 billion years old are probably smarter than the guy who put up the wet paint sign.

There's a lot of science behind the 4 billion number, and it is relatively fixed. Paint dries over time. Duh. ;)
