Vimy Ridge? What is it? Why is it an essay topic? Why does the whole class have to participate in this essay contest?

Your class has to participate in this essay contest because your whole class knows little about the Great War, and Canada's involvement in this war. It is an essay topic because this was one battle (in a four-year long war) in which the Canadian soldiers served with distinction. Vimy Ridge was located some 12km south of the city Arras, in France. The position that the Germans occupied was higher than the Canadians occupied, so the Germans were at an advantage. When the four Canadian divisions attacked on April 9, they did so in a snowstorm. The whole ridge was under control by April 12, with 3,598 Canadian soldiers killed, and another 10,602 wounded. It was one of the most successful allied (Belgians, Canadians, English, French) advance on the Western Front. As far as Canadian independence goes, Canada was already an independent nation, but since 1867 this was the finest example of Canada "defining itself as a nation through military achievement." The 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge will take place on April 9th, 2007.

i don't % to offend you or something yet your stats are incorrect. usa replaced into in simple terms starting to be a member of the conflict for the duration of the conflict of Vimy Ridge. And it replaced into purely Canadians on the conflict. No different allied us of a replaced into modern-day. It replaced into the 1st time in Canada's background that replaced right into a Canadian conflict led via purely Canadians. It replaced into important too by using fact 2 hundred 000 french and english infantrymen had died in the previous attempting take the ridge. tremendously spectacular too by using fact it purely took 3 days to take with purely 3000 casualties pondering honestly everyone replaced into in a trench impasse. yet you notice i'm biased reason i'm Canadian. i does not pass around telling different Canadians although that it replaced right into a US victory. Your *** could get dropped.
