Why, although the creation and bias of race began around the same time and for the same reasons, is there less of a known/seen/admitted racism against Natives than any other group in todays societies particular African Americans for the reasoning of those being the first other American groups discriminated against unjustly.

As a Native woman I would have to say I disagree with this statement. Native people today have the highest rates of poverty, violent death, alcoholism, diabetes, infant mortality, teen suicide etc.. And all of that is a result of continued oppression and racism!

Having said that I do know where you are coming from. The sad truth is that Native Americans are the "invinscible race". This means they are often left out of race discussion, their history isn't taught, many people even believe that Natives are extinct. It is a common problem that Native people must deal with. The government keeps it this way because it is too hard for them to deal with Native issues because to deal with them they would have to admit the horrible history of this country. Because they are the invinscible race you may feel like there is less discrimination going on against them. Believe me though, they are equally discriminated against.

Just look at Yahoo Answers. People are talking about supporting Native mascots, believe that Native people came across a land bridge, say that Natives were savages, say that Natives don't pay taxes, say that Natives this and that.... It's disgusting the sick things people say on here.

Another reason for this is because there are dual stereotypes against Native people. There is the stereotype of the Native Savage and the Noble Native. The Native Savage is obviously racist. But the Noble Native is equally as racist but it seems nicer so people don't think of it as racism.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Native Americans are more assimilated into the mainstream. Also I think that in areas when there is a high number of Native Americans there is some bias that the rest of us that don't live in those areas are not aware of. I noticed this when I worked in an area with a large number of N.A. and I was excited to meet them and learn about their culture, but I was not very welcomed by them because they had had some bad experiences with the 'white' population in the area. They expected me to be like the others. So I think that in some areas it is there, but we don't know about it.

I Agree. EVERYONE should be yelling as loud as the African Americans so that people are aware that groups discriminated against unjustly just cos of their race , colour, etc...is not to be tolerated.

Yes and No, I believe that most blacks and other consicious Americans realize the the faults of the europeans when it came to the mistreatment of the NATIVES...However, they were conpensated and are still being compensated in some things so maybe that's why the Black ***** gripes so much:) I am not a Native I am a Black *****
