I recently bought a "Belly Bar" because I heard they taste great and have a lot of vitamins. As I read the nutrional facts though, I noticed it is very high in folic acid and other vitamins which is great. However, I read on my vitamin bottle that over 1mg of folic acid daily may lead to anemia. I have also heard that too much vitamin A is not good while you're pregnant. Lastly, the bar says that it contains all of the daily supplemental nurtients needed during pregnancy. Should I not eat these while I am taking my prenatal vitamins? Has anyone else tried these while taking their prenatals and have had no negative results from them?
Serious answers only please!
Thank you for your help!!

It looks like the makers of the belly bar have made it to replace the prenatal vitamin. It says on the site that eating 1 belly bar a day and eating a well balanced diet will give mom all the vitamins and minerals she needs, but there is also a disclaimer for you to see your dr before altering your diet, or stopping your prenatal vitamins.

With the folic acid- I think you may be reading the label wrong. It is usually measured in micrograms, and the usual recommendation is that pregnant or women wanting to get pregnant need to take at least 400-600 micrograms of folic acid, and sometimes up to 4,000 micrograms (4 milligrams) if they had a previous pregnancy/baby with neural tube birth defects.
A lack of folic acid can lead to a type of anemia and can thereby cause neural tube defects like spina bifida. More info is on the 3rd link listed below.

Vitamin A is good in small amounts- the bad vitamin A, also called retinol, is not good. The belly bar website says that they get their vitamin A from beta-carotene, and safe source also found in carrots.

It's usually not possible to OD on vitamins because your body naturally excretes the excess amounts, but to be on the safe side, take a bar to your dr/midwife and see what they say about it.

And check out the links below- they are pretty interesting.

Re. "It's usually not possible to OD on vitamins because your body naturally excretes the excess amounts" -- no.

"Vitamin A: If taken in excess, this vitamin can build up in the liver and cause serious harm to a growing baby."

For a start.

It's generally a good idea to avoid anything marketed to pregnant women beyond pre-natal vitamins and maternity clothes; they're all a #$*! waste of money. It's not moisturizer at $10/tube, it's "stretch mark cream" at $40/jar!
