I have been a successful Language Arts Middle School teacher in an urban setting. Would like to work with older students in an urban setting. Have had experience (week-long college tours on a bus with 31 h.s. students traveling 1000s of miles) with high school students and enjoy their maturity level. Preparing to enter licensure program. Anyone else made the move from middle to secondary?

I had transition of job from high school to middle school. My first experience was that of high school. Your observation is correct. High school students are more mature. They do things on their own. They are not required to be told to be regular in studies. They have sense of discipline, order, perfection etc in what they do. They seldom attack physically. They express their hatred for a person by their sharp, sarcastic and witty remarks(much like adults)
It may seem weird, though, that inspite of being mature enough, they sometimes throw you off-balance. They are not open to tell whether or not they like a teacher. They have roundabout ways to express their opinion.
They are attentive and very responsive to teacher they like. However, teachers they hate are often put to test. They will try to test your mastery on the subject matter. They will mock at you if your response to their question is not-so-perfect. They test you if you feel jealous of other teachers who are more popular than you are. They often engage in arguments and observe our reactions very carefully.
The licenture program itself will tell you a lot about their cognitive development, learning styles, nature and nurture etc. Many a times its only after some experience that we understand the true importance of this licenture program.
If high students consider you as their best teacher, you have three reasons to be proud of yourself.
1)For having a mastery in your subject
2)For being humorous and an excellent communicator
3)For being humble, compassionate and thier best confidante.

Teaching high school is completely different from middle school.
High schoolers can be both more mature than but also more difficult to handle than middle school students.
But I guess a good teacher could handle either equally well...

It takes a special sick person to teach middle school. Most people either stay forever or leave fairly quickly
