Huge advantage. The air around the unit, and the unit itself are several degrees cooler, so it is easier for the unit to transfer heat from your home air to the outside air. Window air conditioners can benefit from shade as well. My original a/c was in an end window that was shaded in the afternoon. I could turn my living room into a cold room, but when I had to move it to a window than received afternoon sun, it would run longer, and the room would not be as cool.

Although it is possible to plant bushes near the condenser, leave room for adequate air circulation. Without good air circulation, the temperature near the condensing unit will rise. The higher temperature will reduce the capacity of the air conditioner, causing it to work harder and provide less cooling. This could also kill the shrubbery.
Hope this helps...taken from the link below:

The sole purpose of the outside unit (condenser) is to dissipate heat that has been absorbed by the evaporator. The cooler the condenser the more efficiently it will work.

yes it dosent work a shard and protects it from the wather it is also recommended that you put up a fence around it or a small bush about three feet in front of it this helps to stop false readings ie the thermostat thinks its cooler due to a small breeze yet it really isnt answered by a certified universal hvac technician
