in sept of 2005 i won this goldfish at a fair for my four year old daughter,i assumed it would die asap but lo and behold he lives on.i have him in a big tank with a filter(like five gallon i guess)and though i do take care of him,i feed him regularly and change his filters sometimes his tank does get dirty looking.even after filter change.(i have 2 kids ,2 cats and a husband!)anyway i was preparing to scrub out his tank and noticed his eye was missing!!im grossed out and upset as he is now part of the familia..what causes this.he is acting normal swimming and stuff...help!

He should be fine as long as he is eating and swimming normally. I assume there are no other fish in the tank so the only real answer would be a disease. Likely a bacteria infection.

a 5 gallon isn't big for a goldfish, slim bodied goldfish (commons) should be in a pond. fancies should be in at least 20gallons. here's a good site to figure out what kind you have, it has pictures and descriptions: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/ftypes.html

once you figure out what kind you have you can either goolge it for proper care or post it up here and I can give you more info. people think goldfish are easy fish, but they're actually pretty high maintenance unless you don't know what you're doing.

as for the eye... are there and sharp decorations? plastic plants? he probably snagged it on something if there is anything like that in the tank. keep the water very clean until it heals, maybe add a bit of an antibiotic to prevent infection. just go to the pet store and look for something that fights bacteria, or if you have a RELIABLE and no, most pet stores don't have reliable employees, but if your store does you can ask them to recommend one.

ironic.....i had a fish i won from a fair that everyone said would die asap and he lived for YEARS, the only problem was he seemed to be the runt of my tank so when the other goldfish got bigger they picked on him and then my mom cleaned the tank and he died.

and second...your fish should be fine, i heard somewhere a story of how someone accidently sucked up there fish in one of those tube things you use to clean the tank and he lost an eye but did fine. maybe he just snagged it somewhere?? must be odd seeing your fish without an eye. try going to a local pet store and see if they have any suggestions.

I checked online and i think its called popeye. Pop Eye

Its caused from badly cleaned tanks, and the symptoms are the eyes popping out of sockets. To treat it start with antibacterial treatment and add salt to the aquarium also.

The person who answered that it's a condition called "pop eye" is correct. It's normal for golfish, but you still need to take the action recommended in her answer....
