I have just started a tank and have all male guppies about 6 in a ten gallon tank. I add 3 a week after the tank was set up and 3 another week later and now the new ones have all died within days. I was given three more and now 3 have died and 1 is left. Tank levels are all fine and it only seems to be new fish that I add to the tank are effected.

Your tank is right on schedule, the ammonia numbers are going down, because it is being converted to Nitrite. Nitrite is more toxic to fish than ammonia, and it will take another three weeks for the de-nitrifying bacteria to develop colonies. Don't add any more fish until then. Do small water changes(10%),daily until the nitrite numbers come down. Then add a few more fish(no more than three),and wait another couple of weeks before adding more. Be patient and let the bacteria colonies develop at a normal pace.------Good luck,PeeTee

Well, I was going to tell you to check the water parameters, but aparently that's not the problem if you've already done that. For a 10 gallon, a week isn't really long to cycle, though it may cycle if you add becteria supplements (such as stresszyme or cycle). give it a few weeks with just the ones left in it, then slowly add more 1-2 at a time, making sure nothing gets thrown off when you add another fish. Also ,have you noticed any kind of illness, parasite, anything on the new fish that may be accounting for this? It's a good idea to quarantine new fish for a few days at east. I use one of those cheap gallon takns with a pump and filter for this - I rarely buy more than one small fish at a time).

Watch who you buy your fish from. Your best bet is to find a store that deals only with fish. (not petco, petsmart, etc) Where ever you go to get your fish, take a look at the tanks. Are they always clean and are the fish always healthy looking? If not, you probably don't want to get your fish there. Also, ask about their return policy. Some places offer up to a week for replacement/refund.

Take a water sample to the store and have them test it for you. Most will do it for no charge. You may be missing something. (I had a test kit that went bad on me.)

I hope this helps

Good Luck

Be VERY careful where you buy fish, or even get fish, the new fish were most probably all sick already when you got them, do yourself a favor and do a complete water change and clean everything in your tank before the other fish get sick and die.........
A word of advise get some female guppies as well, it might help repopulate your tank

Double check your test kit by taking a sample to a store and having it checked. That sure does sound like a high ammonia or nitrite problem. Sometimes test kits are not accurate so checking it from time to time is a good idea.

It could also be that the store got in a bad batch of guppies between your visits, that can easily happen wihout them even knowing at first.

I don't know...guppies are not the strong fish that they used to be...they are so inbred and treated with so many hormones...were all the fish that died from the same tank? Maybe a problem where you got them from?

male fish (especially guppies) are very very viscous towards each other so they may have been killing each other trying to claim territory
