I work with a girl who suspects she is pregnant. She's been to the doctor (they say they don't know what is wrong with her) and taken a few home tests. This has been going on for about five months... She says that she had a three day light period but they are typically seven and heavy. She has all of the classic symptoms. Nausea being one, so much that she's been prescribed something for it. And her abdomen seems to be growing as it would at five months. Is it possible that her body isn't making enough HCG to be detected in regular HPTs? I recommended that she ask for the blood test. Any ideas?

She mentioned something about them doing blood work in a month from now if she doesn't start feeling better. I told her to go to a different doctor and ask for the blood test now... If she's already five months in then she needs prenatal care.

That is a very weird situation. She might have a thyroid issue, she might be malnourished, she could have a bowel disease, she could have a number of health issues. If you are pregnant, you are going to produce the hormone enough to show a positive at some point. She could take a blood test, but I'm sure it would be negative. Sounds like she has some sickness or disease and her doctor needs to look into it more and administer tests.

If her body is not making enough HCG to register after two months of pregnancy, it is unlikely that she is pregnant. She should be tested for an ovarian cyst which can mimic the symptoms of pregnancy. They should have done a blood test by now, if not, she needs to change doctors. After 5 mos, the level of HCG will decline and won't show up anymore so it is moot at this point. She will have to have an ultrasound. It sounds to me as if she is being treated by some seriously incompetent doctors or she is not telling you something that she told them.

If she is pregnant and her body isn't producing enough HCG to be able to tell (which is not very common OR normal), a simple sonogram should do the trick!!! plus, at 5 months the baby would already be kicking and everything, so if she is pregnant she should know for sure by now!!! this sounds kind of weird to me!! i mean, i know that the first couple of months tests could be wrong but 5 months already?!!! that's too weird. i mean, how are you 5 months pregnant and don't know it?!! don't you feel something moving inside you?!!!

It sounds like she is pregnant I would have her call the doctor and have them do a blood test on her. If she is not pregnant there is something definetly wrong with her.

She is not pregnant. Even if she was for a while they would still have been able to detect a hormone level in a test.
She would still test positive even if she had a miscarriage. the level would go down. as the hormone left her body.

I was pregnant with twins and had a negative pregnancy test... If she really thinks she is pregnant, she should trust her instincts. I still thought I was even after the negative test and I was right.

Yes, tests can be incorrect. I would for sure tell her to go get a blood test.

yeah it is possible, sometimes even doctors dont know when someone is pregnant, but they are more likely to know than a pregnancy test
