- What is your novel about?

my plots never play a huge role in my novel and i always feel like answering this question makes my novel sound...trivial I guess, when in fact its pretty deep.

yes!!

i know exactly what you mean. so much goes on in the plot to form my characters' lives, that what the story "is about" is not something i can easily answer. heh, one answer we can give, perhaps, is "you can read it if it gets published."

happy writing!

I guess I wouldn't like it if people asked me that question, especially since I just started working on a novel.

Why don't you take the question as an opportunity to talk about your work as if you'd been asked the right question? What's a person supposed to ask you when they want to know something about what you're working on? What do you ask another person if they're working on something interesting? If there is depth in your writing, talk about that. People just want to get you talking. If they don't really care, (which means they asked just to be polite) you'll be able to tell by the response you get. Then just tell them you'll let them know when it is published.

I strongly doubt that you are a published author.

A very common question would be - what is your novel about?

It is very odd that such a usual question would bother you to the extent that you would post the question on Yahoo Answers.

sadly, I was never asked that. I have never managed to write a novel yet.
but I competely get what you are saying.

people ask me about my prose or songs "what is it about" and it always shocks me.
"what does it mean" especially when it's poetry

instead of reading it , and digging it, they want it explained, as if it's just something simple.

the reason people ask this this question is because they dont want to read your book and are just trying to make conversation
