I'm not really sure what your after. As a consumer, I don't need to know anything about marketing. I either like the commercial, marketing, and packaging of the product, or I don't. I don't have to understand it, I only have to decide if I'm going to buy it.

Now if the question is "As a marketing consultant, why is it important to understand the consumer?" Well that a whole new ballgame! You need to understand the consumer (likes, dislikes, trends, demographics, etc) so you know how to market to them.

I don't think I understand the basis for your question.

It's important as a consumer to understand marketing because a bad product can be marketed in an appealing way to coerce you into purchasing it. A good product can be marketed in a poor way and you'd never know about it unless someone else who already tried it told you about it.
