It's only a happy child for a little while, then it discovers the truth about the uncaring universe slowly strangling the life out of it and preparing all things for death.

It's only a lovely child for a little while, then it turns into a horrible monster.

It only hopes for a little while, then it dies or becomes a liar and then dies. No need to hope anymore. It lives, then it turns to dust. Therefore, it is equal to dust. It's like it was a celebration for dust.

How do parents avoid thinking about this and somehow find joy in the hideous trap that is life?

No, pain does not have a purpose. We die and all we learned was for nothing. Someday the last of all children will die and leave nothing. All is vanity.

Because I like my own life--I like being alive and experiencing life and learning.. I hope that I can impart that to my children. .

Why does death have to be such a sad/horrible thing?

I didn't "avoid thinking about this" when I became pregnant and gave birth.. I know that life ultimately results in death. And part of life is pain. But, there is a reason for the pain. Touch a hot stove--feel pain--Now I know not to do that again! Pain without a purpose is much sadder--but most pain we experience in life has a purpose.

because of the symbolism.

A new born symbolizes life, hope and new beginings.

A baby is also the closest we come to seeing pure innocence, perfection and purity.
