If you are looking at natural selection in a little more detailed aspect other than the survival of the fittest you will see a couple of things.

Traits that are more favorable to a species is generally a product of natural selection. It will tend to eliminate species that do not pocess these traits because it is a harm to the species.
For example say that a species of birds has two different size of beaks, some have medium and others have large. The large birds are able to crack open more seeds for food than the birds with the medium beaks. Therefore, having a large beak is way more benefical. Eventually, the birds with the medium beaks will not live or they will undergo natural selection to create offspring with larger more benefical beaks.
In a nutshell, traits that are more favorable are passed down generations. Traits that are less benefical, are less commonly seen over generations.
I hope that it helps out a little.
