Ok my dang dog knocked a gallon of milk over in my car last week. 3/4 of the gallon went on my floor b4 the sound of my dog laping up the mess caught my attention. I soaked as much up as possible with a towel right away but wasnt able to shampoo it for about 2 hrs. For the next 3 days my car smelled fine. It was pretty cold outside those days. Now it is back up into the 50's and my van wreaks. I shampood it a second time sunday night and Monday it still wreaked. Today is Tues. and I sprayed Resolve carpet cleaner every where. srubed it and vaccumed it as much as possible. I even sprayed some new car scent through out my car. Now it smells like a combination of sour milk and new car scent. I cant afford to have my carpets replaced and I am tired of gagging everry time I open my door any suggestions?

There is a product called Simple Solution. You can buy it at a pet store. There is a live bacteria in it which will consume the organic residue which is causing the odor. This bacteria is not infectious to man or animals. It is mainly sold to remove pet odors, but will work on any organic stain.

DO NOT USE CHLORINE BLEACH it will destroy the color in the carpet.

Go to the grocery store and get some Lestoil and a box of granular non chlorine bleach. Where I live Kroger has both of those and the non chlorine bleach costs about $2 a box for Kroger brand. Mix about a gallon of hot water and add 1/2 cup of Lestoil and about a 1/2 cup of that granular non chlorine bleach to the hot water. Stir it well, wait 10 minutes so it will totally dissolve into the water. Take and put that into a regular garden sprinkle can and soak down the carpet in the spots where that milk has soured and produced a smell. Let stand for at least an hour. Then vacuum it with a wet dry vacuum. Gone will be the odor.

The alternitive and preferred way to do this is to remove that carpet if its a trunk one, and soak it down outside with same brew as above and hose it down with water hose let dry and reinstall it.

I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just put one or two in your car and trunk. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

Adze has it right, take out the carpet. Scrub it good with carpet shampoo, hose it down and let it it air dry. Take some fresh smelling disinfectant and wipe out your entire boot, there are probably pools of dried milk where it seeped through the carpet. Spray with air freshener and let that dry before replacing the carpet.

Try urinegone or ZeroOdor...both work pretty well, I think you can get urinegone at places that sell "as seen on TV" products. I think ZeroOdor works best, but you have to get it online and wait for it, the other stuff you can get at a store. Or try a pet store for some Pet Odor remover...it works on milk and stuff, too.
