I've tried it before, it was ok but i felt like i was ripping JP off , so i never continued - anyway , for years now there has been the "E-Bow" , a little 9-volt battery operated device that replicates that. I've also experimented with slapping out chords with paint stir-sticks , spoons , and a few times i even used a "Facial Massager" (vibrator) to manipulate the strings.

the real problem lies in the way the strings are set; on a violin the bridge is curved so the string arch, a guitar has a flat bridge so the strings lie flat; thus making it near impossible to get all of the strings with the bow.

It's just a gimic (although a cool one) used for showmanship.

You can manipulate the stings with anything. EVH used an electric drill in one of thier songs.

An easier trick for a violinish sound from an electric guitar is this: If you have a Strat or Les Paul type control layout, where a volume knob is close to the bridge, hook your pinkie around it, turn it well down, pluck the string, and then roll the volume up and back down.

OH ZEP THE BEST! Page awesome. I only know one other guitarist that can do it and he does it well. He is a bluesman and his name is Clarence Gatemouth Brown. Ck. him out. You can get his cds tower.com may have a dvd that would be even better. If you get a chance see him in concert. He is older now but still jamin!

Steve Vai played with a bow on "Still of the NIght" with Whitesnake.

The dude from Whitesnake did it. But everyone said he was trying to be like Page. So... its pretty much Jimmy Pages trademark sound. It seems if anyone else does it... they're accused of trying to be him.

I don't know anyone that does and I think you would have to be pretty talented to be able to. Paige is an amazing guitarist he can do pretty much anything when it comes to the guitar.

No one does that regularly or as their standard playing style. It's sometimes done simply for show. I don't think current players do it mainly because it's known as Page's "schtick".
