I think this is a story that gets passed down from generation to generation and is kept alive after it is no longer valid.

Unless you have a super-old car I wouldn't worry about it!

Actually the fuel in the tank keeps the fuel pump cool. When you constantly run on empty, the fuel pump runs hotter and it's lifespan deteriorates. Keep your tank half full or more as much as possible. As far as contaminants entering the system, the fuel pump is equipped with a sock (Filter) where the fuel enters the fuel pump. After the fuel pump you have an inline fuel filter as added protection. Keep your fuel tank at least half full and don't forget to change that (Inline) fuel filter every 30,000 miles.

If you have a fuel injected car with the fuel pump in the tank you could damage the fuelpump because the fuel pump relies on the fuel in the tank to help keep it cool not to mention all the resdue in the bottom of the tank that has to go through the pump and plug up the fuel filter .

The amount of gas left when the light comes on depends on the vehicle. I have had gas lights come on when there is 2 gallons left and another vehicle that has a half gallon left. I would call the dealership that sells your vehicle or go to their website and see if there is a way to send them an email with your question. Let them know what kind of vehicle you have along with the year and they should be able to tell you. You can also get "tricked" if you're on a hill. The sensor may not be covered by gas if all of the gas goes to the opposite end of the tank so be careful of that.

No problem. Your fuel pump already sucks close to the bottom anyway, so the fuel level makes no difference as far as crud is concerned. However, some experts claim that the pump has to work harder with the tank almost empty, but I ALWAYS fill my tank when there is about a coffee cup of gas left, and have never had any pump problems. (probably because it's a TOYOTA)

there is a greater chance of moisture contaminating the fuel , like my dad used to say , it's just as easy to keep the top half full as the bottom
