I had 2 periods last month. First was Jan 3-7 (light) and second Jan15th-Jan 21 (heavy) ...After the second, I didnt ovulate till day 28...Today is day 37. Ive never had such a long cycle before. I have PCOS, and have pretty normal periods thanks to Metforim. Anyone have any ideas on what can cause such a long cycle? Is that even normal? Im having a small amount of what looks like Im ovulating again(discharge)last few days..Anyway this is all bizarre for me. Thanks for any input.

When people have "late periods" its usually because of delayed ovulation. Stress, illness, and all sorts of things can cause late ovulation, and late periods.

Are you charting cycles or using an OPK? That may tell you a little more about your cycles, but with PCOS, I know it's frustrating, and if your cycles start to become less regular, it's a good idea to check in with the doctor who prescribed the metformin for you. You may need to adjust the dose, or consider other medications.

You might be interested in the article that was published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine about PCOS and pregnancy-it said that clomid may have better pregnancy outcomes than metformin alone for pregnancy. The metformin is still important though, to treat PCOS, and manage the things like blood sugar issues, that can lead to serious health problems.

It is probably due to hormonal fluctuations. It happens with PCOS and sometimes will result in a long cycle. This happened to me too except I didn't have any lite bleeding. It seemed like I missed a period. I thought that I had ovulated b/c of a change in cervical mucus, but my temperature increased, but did not remain elevated. I continued to track and then around day 35, my temperature dipped, then stayed elevated and I had a period about 15 days later. Tracking with BBT is more reliable than cervical mucus.
Wonderful that Met worked to regulate your period! How long did it take the Met to work?

When i spoke to the dr, she told me they aren't really concerned with abnormal cycles unless it is abnormal for at least 6 months. Your body is just going through some changes. Good luck.

You are fine, You can have a long cycle, all depends on your hormones, your stress levels, your diet. So that could be the possible reasons. don't stress it.
