It originally started in India..but for a different reason. It wasn't because of the ridiculous saying that smaller feet are sexier, it was because if you break the instep, or the arch, of a woman's feet, she is permanently disabled, and she can't run away from abusive husbands, or to cheat. Perfect advantage for a man, isn't it? *sad lol*

I don't know the exact time period of Chinese history...but it was a way to make women of the time more marketable, especially, in higher levels of society. A common belief of the time was, a foot bound woman would walk in a way that was considered "sexy." It also served a practical purpose...women with bound feet would have to depend on men for their livelihood because they couldn't walk. Not being able to walk prevents a woman from running or working in the fields if they were to leave their men.

The men in China during the old times thought the sexiest feet were small feet and the women let things get a little out of hand.

In former situations, small ft between chinese women were considered as wonderful and woman-like. same to in some African and SE Asian hill tribes, the position women human beings's lips and ears were holed and elongated with discs, and necks were lengthened with metallic rings because youthful---the practitioners trust such practices as perfect traditions. We contained in the popular international see them as painful and barbaric.

i'm not 100% but from what i hear is that they believed small features to be beautiful and so women with small faces, feet etc.... were considered beautiful
