Our 10 mo old has a nasty cold and is all congested. We've tried saline, suctioning, decongestant drops, and a vaporizer, all of which provide temporary relief but don't keep her sleeping at night. Someone suggested adding Vicks Vaposteam to the vaporizer to clear up her airways. I've never tried it before and am a little skeptical, number one because I'm not sure that stuff really works and number two because the package indicates checking with your doctor if the child is under two. I know that camphor is some nasty stuff if ingested, but I'm not sure if such a small amount could be dangerous when breathed in all night. I'm not having any luck searchign the 'net for the answer, so I thougth I'd ask if any of you have heard anything about the subject, either from your doc or pharmacist...Thanks!!

Myth: Vaporub or steam or whatever clears out breathing passages.
Fact: It smells good and nothing else.
Fact: Small children are irritated by the aroma, especially their eyes.

Hi my son is 10 months old and last month he had the worst cold you could ever think of, he couldn't breath out of his nose and WAs s then finding it hard to sleep, i used Vic's baby vapor rub because it says it ok for babies over 3 months, i only used the smallest amount on his chest and back and it work really well he was then sleeping all night again and had no problems with it. or i would suggest using it but like me only a small amount, if your still not sure go to your doctors .i hope your daughter gets better soon.

I wouldn't use it initll you ask her doctor. Have you tried Vicks Baby Rub? It works like Vicks Rub for adults, but it's for babies older then 3 months. I've used that on my 9 month old daughter when she has colds and it seems to help, especially at night. But since your daughters probably feeling so crappy, she might not sleep through the night no matter what you do. She might just need extra love and cuddling which equals a few sleepless nights for you and your spouse. Hopefully, she will feel better soon though!
Good luck!

I used it for my 6 month old baby, because it said suitable for over 6 months. It helped to clear blocked nose, but also I used Karvol as well and I think Karvol worked better than Vaporub. If your baby has sensitive skin then Vaporub might irritate her skin. What I did is put few drops of Karvol on muslin and hold it near my baby's nose to let her inhale it. It took few minutes, but worked quite well. I'm sorry I do not know how safe to use this as I'm not a doctor though it said suitable for over 3 months.
Hope your daughter gets well soon.

My doctor always suggested turning on the shower to supper hot and taking the baby in there and closing the door and sitting there for awhile. Sometimes it works. When that didn't work I used these plugin things that worked GREAT!! They're called " Pedicare Gentle Vapors". It's kind of strong but it doesn't seem to bother the baby and it works great.

you can buy vicks baby, there is always karvol which you could put on the bedsheet you can put 1 teaspoon of normal vicks in half a pint of hot (not boiling) water and sit her on your knee and let her breath it in but don't put it in a vaporizer. I've had to do it with all of my kids when they've had colds and it seems to work

try albas oil (pronounced ull bus) ( think that is how you spell it) they do a baby version - 4 drops on a tissue - works a treat
if you have to steam a room put a kettle in the room and take the lid off - that stops it turning off ( dont let it run dry or fill it too high because it bubbles and spits) obviously keep baby well away.
