Think of it like this with out a filter your turtle is sitting in dead water a nasty fespool of his own **** it is equivalent to us taking a bath and going to to the bathroom in the tub and laying in it so yes i say it is necessary. The best one is the whisper they sit in the water so you do not have to fill the tank to the top.

You don't absolutely need one, but I would suggest that you do get one. It just makes it a lot easier to keep the tank clean.

I am not sure what setup you have, but my turtles, salamanders, etc. always had a setup with land on one side of the tank and water on the other. I have had a fountain with a built-in filter once and another time I used a skimming filter and hung it off of a rock on the land side.

If you rinse the sand enough and give it time to settle the filter will be fine. I have a few turtles who have had sand for 10+ years with the same filter with no issues. You don't HAVE to use any substrate. If you want to use gravel it should be something big enough that the turtle can't swallow. I use sand, pea gravel (very large pea gravel), pool filter sand, bar bottom tanks, river rocks etc.

Yes
its alot easier if you have one otherwise youd have to change the water weekly (at least)

if you do get a filter (which i reccomend) you should try and get an under gravel filter attached to an air pump because big ones are to turbulent and create too much suction which makes it hard for your baby turtles to swim
