how do i test a dell laptop battery?

i have a dell laptop battery and not sure if it works. how do I test it if i don't have a laptop anymore?

get a voltmeter and measure the prongs on the backside of the battery and get a reading. Compare it to the rating on the front of the battery. Can it hold a charge? You need to put it into a laptop to find that out.
