Average college is $4,500/semester.
2 semesters per year means $9,000/year.

Which is money you would need after you first paid the taxes on it - so you would need a job which pays you about $13,500 (you then pay $4,500 in taxes, social security, etc).

You can get the money from your parents. Can they afford to give it to you?

You can get a job and earn the money yourself. Can you work enough hours - at probably a low paying, unskilled job - and still have time to attend college and study?

Or you can get a loan, which the government guarantees. You will pay interest and repaid the loan after you graduate. How many years will this take? At the same time you are "just starting out in life" and have your first real apartment, car, bills, credit card, girlfriend/boyfriend (dating expenses).

Or you can go after scholarships. Most private ones are about $1,500. These are from corporations or foundations - but few of them will provide enough money to cover all expenses for 4 years (or you could go to a 2 year community college).

I just returned from speaking at a college to a group of civic clubs on them obtaining grants from corporations. While at the college, I checked the cost of textbooks - most ran from $90 to $130. And some classes, may have 2 to 3 textbooks.

College is expensive. Researching and writing a scholarship application may take 1-2 hours - and you may get $1,500 - about $700/hour. How much would you make per hour if you were woprking a job? And what would you be doing in this job?

Going to the library and doing research and writing scholarships applications is a lot better way of spending your time.

What do you mean how could the money help you? Free money is always a great thing. Coming from someone about to graduate from college, you do not want a lot of loans to bogg you down after you graduate. get as much free money as you can!

One, it helps deduct some of the pay of how much the college tuition will cost.
Two, it may go towards your text books or school supplies. Stuff like that.
Go for all the scholorships you can. You will use them sooner or later and if not, it doesn't hurt you to have them on hand.

This may sound stupid, but, they save you money as they are free money.
I should add, you could just get a "Student Loan" and pay for it for the next ten years after you graduate.
