yes zinc can help overcome a cold, but it's not the only thing you will need. Zinc helps stop the production of bacteria that spreads during a cold. What you also need is more vitamin A, C, B-complex, E, Kelp, Protein in a easily digested form, Calcium, Garlic, enzymes, lots of water, and plenty of rest. It's true that home made chicken soup is good for you too. Herbs that help get rid of a cold are, bayberry root bark, quinine, St. John's wort, slippery elm, pau d'arco, bark of the butternut walnut, and yarrow tea. Homeopathic remedies are Gelsemium 6c, and Mercurius solubilis 6c.

Zinc is an immune booster, so if you're around someone who has a cold and don't want to get it, you can take zinc a couple of times and decrease your chances. I don't think it has much of an effect after you already have a cold though.
P.S. Do not EVER take zinc supplements on an empty stomach. It will give you the worst tummy ache you ever had.

A friend of mine told me get and try a package of the wafer supplements about the size of nesco candy there was little taste but my cold instead of 72 or 96 hours was gone in 23 hours. As an experiment we tried it over the next two years on different workers. It worked so well we all (63) employees now use them along with our friends and families. I hear that Zimcam is and does the same thing everyone and I do mean everyone is using them and they sure appear to work!
God Bless You and Our Southern People.

There is zero benefit in "taking zinc supplements for common cold"
What I think you are referring to is sucking on Zinc tablets or zinc candy. That is a proven benefit in sore throat relief. In fact it decreases the time a sore throat is effected by a cold virus.

In addition to the above suggestions about Zinc lozenges (Cold-Eeze) you may want to try Zicam.
It's an over the counter cotton swab that you dab the inside of your nose with. I've had success with Cold-Eeze but Zicam sounds like it targets the site of the cold even better.

I haven't been sick in over 7 years, and I take an Airborne every time I leave my house to anywhere 'public', grocery store, church, etc.
Airborne has trace minerals as well an Vit C and Echinacea. Zinc is one of the minerals.
It works for me! I used to have 2-3 colds every year as well as strep every couple of years. Like I said, it's been over 7 years now.

Yep--they even sell flavoured zinc lozenges that you dissolve in your mouth to alleviate cold symptoms. I'm not aware of any solid clinical evidence of their effectiveness, but I do take them whenever I get a cold and they seem to help by shortening the length of the cold. Usually they have them by the check-out counters at Wal-Mart, Long's Drugs, etc. in rolls as well in the "cold remedies" section of department and drug stores. For me, they help best with sore throat symptoms.

Yeah, I heard that Zicam helps you get over your cold 3 times faster. However, it tastes like *** and I don't think I got over my cold any faster...I was still sick after a week and a half after taking Zicam how it was directed. So in other words, it doesn't work. Plus, the nasal spray has been known to ruin the person's sense of smell. Wouldn't recommend it.

Yes - scientifically proven to shorten your cold. Take zinc with food though! It can upset your stomach without food.

Definitely helps, we had some vitamin C with zinc lozenges. Cool mist humidifier, add a pint of hydrogen peroxide to the gallon tank, run it at night while you sleep-- works best.
