I am not gay, so please excuse if I miss the mark, but I'm trying to give you an answer:)
I think it probably is put into "culture" because of the communal aspect. The gay community around my area is very knit, and consider their orientation to be a major part of their culture and identity.
As for people asking ignorant questions, and spreading intolerance, I would only recommend to you to ignore them. In any other case, I would say stand up and voice your beliefs, but since these people are only over the internet, they aren't going to be as easy to inform. Remember that when people are unenlightened, they tend to act more and more like children.
I agree that it's inappropriate, and I too, wish more people would be more tolerant. Be strong!

A lot of the joking comes from other gay people. It may be part of the philosophy of: laugh first and no one laughs at you.
I learned a long time ago that a healthy and wry sense of humor can get me through many difficult situations. This is not to say that I need to join in if ever people are trying to me as a piñata. Often times people joke when they feel uncomfortable. Other times, though, people joke to soften what might be an actual hateful blow. In situations like this, a good response I've learned is: 'Ouch.' Sometimes people don't realize when they've gone too far.
A story: once I was in a small pit band accompanying a musical show. I was at the piano, and conducting the rest of the players from there. One day before the show we were all sitting in the green room (that part of backstage where performers/instrumentalists hang out) and the other band members began making fun of gay people. It occurred to me that none of them realized that I'm gay. I waited a few jokes to go by before I piped in. "If you're going to make fun of us," I said, "At least learn to imitate us correctly. It's not a lisp. Gay people don't say, 'You're thilly.' We use a hiss. A very sibilant 'sss.' Here. Practice it with me so you can get it right." I then made them practice the sibilant 'ess' sound. At the end of it they learned: our director is gay. And he's funny. And he has the capacity to laugh at himself.
We all got along great after that.

There aren't really that many of them...I know a lot of straight people and they simply don't care that I'm gay and married to a gay man. It is not an issue these days...except to a few who can't seem to progress into the future...but they get left behind.

I sometimes feel the same way. I get aggravated then I realize that aggrivation is the reaction they are after. Sometimes my funny bone gets the best of me. Sometimes I just ignore it because reporting seems fruitless. Still, every once in awhile I meet someone truly fantastic and converse with that person privately. It's then that it makes it all worthwhile. Stay strong, you are a good person, I can see that. Keep it real and you will shine.

This place can be a real barnyard - full of PIGS and CHICKENS. They love hiding behind the comforts of the computer, typing up insults that they'd never dare speak out loud. For them, insulting others makes themselves feel good.

Understand that this section attreacts internet Trolls...they get their entertainment by getting a rise out of those here...making them angry, etc. The best and only way to deal with Trolls is to completely ignore them...no answers, no reporting, no nothing..they will become bored very quickly..this is just plain old Internet wisdom, and the problems run through all the chat lines, etc. IGNORE! Don't be a fool and feed troll's sickness. Ignore them completely. KKKwhater, or whatever his name is at any one moment, lives to get people here to be angry and write diatribes...Ignore him. He is operating under '....lulu, princess..., you name it, he is a TROLL
