It is very important to know the time length should the grade one students must take to finish their homework. So you should take into consideration that you might have slow students in your class, then you probably need to decide the time length of the homework according to such students such as it must not exceed 30 minutes.

The recommendation is 10 minutes multiplied by the grade level. So first graders should have 10 minutes of homework. I give my second graders between 15-25 minutes of homework. It also depends on the child. For some children the assignments are going to take longer. If it is taking your child too long, talk to the teacher (not the principal!) I would not mind reducing homework for a child that is having trouble, as long as they are still getting some practice.

My 1st grader (public school) gets homework only 1-2 times a week....addition/subtraction or little reading booklets. She hasn't brought a spelling list home since the 1st 9 wks and her teacher doesn't send completed classwork home either. But I do know she does 3rd grade work in math and reading on the computer at school and begs to do "hard" math at home and reads "big kid" books to us. She is a straight A student!! Yes, my husband & I do make school visits VERY often, not just occasional PTA/PTO meetings!

The homework I send home is usually:
1-2 worksheets reviewing the work of the day in English Language arts and 1-2 pages of review work in math. I'm not sure how long this takes for them. I'm sure my bright students do it quicker than my struggling ones. I also teach a bilingual class so I alternate between English homework and Spanish homework. The spelling words depend on our Core reading program. When we did short "u", the words consisted of bug, jug, duck, and sun.

I would expect that 30 minutes will be a standard answer for grades K-3.
Here is a snippet from the Lynchburg (Va) City Schools homework policy.
---Quoted---
Primary ( Pre K-2 )
Homework assigned two to four times per week with the total time per night being no more than thirty minutes. In addition, students practice reading at their independent reading level daily, including weekends, for at least fifteen minutes.
*Appropriate assignments include extensions of classroom instruction, review of previously achieved skills and information, problem solving applications of classroom skills, writing assignments, spelling and vocabulary review, practice to improve competency, and special projects.
--End Quote---
Hope that helps!

Giggle Fairy,I teach grades 1-3 in Illinois.Appearently the usual child of this age attention span level averaeges at 15 minutes per subject.Parents and teachers try,but it is hard to generalise an exact number.Observe your own childs attention span and work with that by conversing with your childs teacher and working out a better homework guideline. Each child has his or her own talents that need to be brought out by the help of both parent and teacher.

20 - 30 minutes is long enough anything more and the children will grow up to hate school.
