To warn people of some impending event yet to come is useless, they will not believe you. To tell them you are from the future will get you locked up for a long time in a psych ward. To upset the economics will have a devastating effect. To save a life could have very, very devastating effects, or to cause a death - same deal.
So I do not see where there is much that can be acheived by traveling back in modern times, which I mean the past 1500 years or so.
Witness the construction of the 7 wonders of the world, save the lost works of the ancient civilizations, see if there really was a lost city of Atlantis.
Walk on the land of Pancea or witness the time and space before the Gig Bang ( in holograph mode). Be the only person to witness the very moment when our sun first lit up. See the formation of the moon. Yea, i would like to travel to the very begining of everything, the time before time ( now thats a paradox if ever there was one).

ok, heres where i explain what is called the butterfly effect. it basically says that making asny tiny little change could change everything. For example, lets say you decided to go back and see a concert you missed. While at the concert you use the bathroom. Because of this some other guy in the bathroom takes a little longer. Because of this he gets back to his seat later and misses seeing his girlfriend kissing another guy and dosent break up with here like he originally would have. They have a kid and he is the next hitler and kills the world. So, yeah, you may want to stay out of the past.

Travel back with about 2,000,000 other folks to a time when the Earth was relatively unspoiled, there to establish an idyllic civilization.

I would go back and try to prevent the sacking of the great library of Alexandria....mankind lost a tremendous amount of knowledge for all time when that happened.
