They are called "South Americans" since Brazil is on the continent of South America.
People from the United States are called Americans because it has become an abbreviation of "United States of America" (ie, "America the Beautiful," etc.) It doesn't have anything to do with arrogance, it's an expression that has become a tradition over time. People from the U.S. know better than to say they are the only "Americans."

They are as I am of proud Portuguese heritage. Portugal is located in Europe next to Spain. Portugal was a major player in world domination during the 14,15 & 1600's. South America is a Continent but no one considers themselves American. They are Brazilian. American is a name reserved for the people in the USA, the United States of America

Because if both North and South Americans were all called Americans, then people from the U.S. would have to be called United States of Americans. Or change their name and be United Statesers or United Statesites.

Every person born in the American Continent is American.
You may be North American, or Central American South American.
Just some people in this world don't know this fact, and call all gringos "Americans".
It is simply a tongue shortcut to United States of America inhabitant.

I am so sick of other American countries making a big deal out of this. The reason why is because the name is long: United States of America. Pretty much the only way to shorten it is to say "Americans". What do you expect Americans to be? "United Statians"? Also, why should any other country use it if they can use their country's name to name their people as well, i.e. Argentina=Argentinean or Argentine, Colombia=Colombian. It has absolutely nothing to do with status, it just makes sense.

True, they are located in South America, but they do not want to be called Americans. If they wanted to be called Americans, that would be up to them. Mexico and Canada are located in North America, but they don't want to be called Americans either.

They are called Brazillians from South America, and the People From the United States are called Yanks from America, and the People from North America are called Canadians. The Yanks do not own all of America at least not yet all though they would like to.
