get a backup band together, practice religiously, and start getting gigs in bars and clubs. once you get decent, and you start getting a decent number of people coming to your shows, record a demo, expand your touring base, and try to get a recording contract. it may take longer, but it is a better way to do it than going on american idol, because you dont have to sell your soul to rupert murdoch in the process.
ETA: a lot of college radio stations and npr music stations have a local show once a week or so, that only plays music from local and regional bands. they are good places to send demo tapes to once you get a band and have been touring for a while.

Try auditioning for local bands in your area, once they start getting gigs at bars, weddings or whatever then cut a demo together to send out to radio stations. Half will throw them away before listening to it, half of those will throw it away after listening to it, half of those that don't might listen to it again with a different DJ on duty, half of those will throw it away but then you might get down to 10 DJ's across the country who listened to it 3 or more times. If they liked it enough to listen more than once they might play it once on air. Sometimes it only takes 1 person if it's the right person, to forward it to someone who can help you.

You should do local talent shows. Move to Atlanta or depending on what kind of music you sing. If it's country, move to Nashville! Atlanta has a lot happening musically. Get out there and work hard for it. Radio stations, make a demo, etc. Good luck!
