They are nocturnal so they do most of their activities at night. And even though they are called hermits they really shouldn't be alone, in the wild (where they all come from) they travel in groups up to 100+ crabs. If you do plan on getting them please make sure you do some research on providing them with the proper set up. A lot of stores sell those round cages where the crabs can climb up the sides but they need a glass (or plastic tank) with a hood that covers the whole top, they not only can escape very easily but they need good humidity to breathe. They also need 2 different bowls for water, one for fresh and one for salt. I'll add a couple links for you to check out because if I wrote all the things you should know I would be here all day.

There are many more sites out there if you want read even more about them.

Well, they don't do a whole lot, sleep, eat, sleep, eat, poop, repeat..

I would encourage you to get one though, not many people have hermit crabs, everyone thought I was weird when I got one, but after a while, everyone was like, " can I see it, will it bite me?.. how is Bob doing?.. "

They are an odd type of pet to have, but they are low maintenance, all you really have to do is feed them about 2-3 times a day, and clean their cage everyday, if you skip a day, it will smell awful, I never forgot to clean Bob's cage again!.. Lol..

But don't let that stop you from getting one, they're pretty cool, and you can buy cool painted shells for them to live in, or you can paint it yourself.. Mine had a Bengals shell, that's my football team.. But you can find pretty much anything, and no they don't bite, and they are kinda shy at first..

Be sure if you have any cats you get it a good cage, because my cats just sat beside his cage and gawked at him, I know they were all just thinking " hmm, I guess that's whats on the menu today, mmm looks good ".. lol..

Good Luck..

My girlfriend just got 2 for her kindergarten classroom. The kids love to spray the tank with water and they love to feed them. She takes them out and lets them walk on the table. The children try to see which is the fastest. They also love to watch them climb in the tank! HOWEVER- They Do sleep a lot! If you have a few, your chances of being entertained are better. They are about to get more shells so that the crabs can go from one to another. Make sure that you have a secure top- they are very good at getting out!

Dont listen to Treida i. My hermies are awesome. If you're looking for something fun like a dog, get a dog >.<

Hermies are very social. They need to be in at least groups of 3. I have 8 and they all get together and are happy little campers. They are nocturnal, so they are only really active at night. If you want to get hermies, here are some things you will need:
*A 10gal tank for 2-3, a 20gal long tank for 3-5, and so on, (I have a 30gal long for my 8.)
*A food and water dish. Make sure the water isn't too deep so they dont drown!
*clean Play sand from a hardware store.(so they can dig. I leave one half of my tank deep and the other shallow so they mostly moult in one area...)
*An ISO tank for moulters you have uncovered or picked on hermies(not NEEDED but recomended)
*A red party light so you can see what they're doing at night without disturbing them. They dont see red.

These guys are really fun. If you get hermies, please dont buy painted shells, they can really hurt your hermie or even kill it!

As always research the pet you are thinking about getting. If it sounds good to you, you should get it. Good luck!

I don't know that I'd say they are fun. They are interesting to watch if you get an active one. Most of the ones my kids had would just hide in their shells all the time. They came out at night and crawled around when no one was watching.

One time I stayed up nearly all night to watch one switch shells. Pretty interesting though.

hermit crabs are kindof fun...usually they crawl around and pinch you on the hand........so if you get a hermit crab make sure you dont get pinched, because it hurts.....bad! but still they are very fun!

They are fun if you have two or more... I have to agree with what most said ^^ up there... they do tend to be boring at times.... but if you have two or more and you let them out on your table and watch where they adventure too can be amusing... my kids used to always bring theirs out and have a race to see who would win.. be careful if they get out of their cage though.. one went MIA on the second floor of the house and we didn't not find it till weeks later on the first floor when I was moving furniture around for Christmas... needless to say we were a bit surprised... sadly the poor thing did not survive ;((

I had two. They were kind of fun. For a while anyway. They do pinch and a lot of the time stay secluded. I think dogs and cats are a lot more fun. Or @ least fish. You watch them swim around in their little bowl.

um... they're not really for you if you're looking for a "fun" pet. i had two, hermy and krabby patty. they just kind of sit there all day. but it's a really exciting thing when they actually come out of their shells and crawl around... for about six seconds. then the entertainment is over.
