A nice piece of steak with gravy.

Just kidding.

Goldfish will eat almost anything, but here is my recommendation:

Romaine lettuce

This is pretty good (better than iceberg lettuce which has little nutritional value). It will give your goldfish a fairly nutritional meal with little digestive problems (high roughage food won't block their intestinal tract).

You can buy a vegetable clip from most fish shops and clip it on the side of the tank. They will eat away as they like. (Edit: This is why you can't put goldfish in planted tanks, they eat the plants).

I would NOT just drop bread, lettuce etc. into the tank. Goldfish's intestinal tracts are like a straight tube. They will keep eating and eating as much as they can. It is easy to give them too much food (if you do decide to give them bread etc. only give them a little amount). If they keep eating (more than they need), the new food will just push the old food out of their bodies without giving it time to digest properly. If the goldfish's "poop" looks the same as its food (colour etc.) it is probably being feed too much.

The reason why I said this lettuce is that goldfish are prone to intestinal tract blockages if feed too much. This lettuce will not block their intestines (fiberous).

By the way, be careful if you do this that the tank doesn't become "lettuce soup" this can cause trouble with blocked filter intakes etc.

EDIT: I agree with Magicman to boil it SLIGHTLY (just a few seconds, basically a hot water dip) to soften it up. Do not over do it as the nutrition will be boiled out and the lettuce will get too soft.

Oh and (of course) wash any lettuce etc. you give them well, to get rid of sprays, chemicals etc. on the leaves.

Goldfish should eat a variety of different foods to boost their health. It's a good idea to slice oranges and lemons and freeze them overnight and then place them in the tank to pick at throughout the day. Shredded lettuce can also provide them with a few extra viatamins that fish flakes don't contain, and wheat bread (not white). Be sure though, that you do make sure that they get more flakes than they do people food or they can get sick. What I did with my goldfish and koi was provide them with flakes 3 times a day as normal, and once in the morning give them either some lettuce or a citrus fruit. Bread is only good to give them about once a week or it can make them sick. Hope this helps, and enjoy your fish.

It depends on what human food you want to feed. No bread or crackers or anything with seasonings on it. Goldfish love, and actually, regularly need as part of their diet, veggies and fruits. You should feed them things like dark green lettuces (not iceberg), spinach, broccoli flowers, cucumbers, zucchini, fresh boiled or thawed frozen peas with the shells removed, steamed carrots, fresh shrimp (no seasonings!) boiled chopped eggs, oranges, grapes, kiwis, strawberries, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, etc. Try anything you want. They won't eat everything, but give 'em all a try. Just remember to take out anything they don't eat so it doesn't foul the water.

Feed them goldfish nutrition. you will get it at any puppy shop. Use faucet water with aquarium water conditioner (dechlorinator) further. you are going to desire a huge tank. the person-friendly goldfish given out at carnivals substitute into 12 to 18 inches long.

the list of goldfish food goes on forever -- i feed mine peas to balance out pellets -- peas are fiber that help keep them regular. anytime i have greens -- spinach, kale, endive, escarole, i save some and give it to them. its kind of fun if you julianne it they swing it around like little streamers while they eat it. they like oranges but not grapefruit. boiled zuccini and cucumbers are good too.

Any leafy greens are a good choice. You might shock them a bit in some boiling water for a few seconds just to soften them up some.
