of ghosts at night! Like, I used to be scared of stuff like the Grude or the Ring, but I'd just tell myself it's not true and stop being scared. But now people are saying ghosts are real! And that scares me soooo so bad I have to sleep with my light on! What should I do? PS I'm 14.

Even if they are real they don't just attack you. They mind their own business. And if there is a bad ghost, usually they are in places where someone has been killed somehow. If you live in the house for a long time then why would you even think such a thing? You should tell somebody about your fear. A lot of times if you are afraid of something and you tell someone then the fear usually leaves you. There's nothing to be afraid of. The stuff in the movies is called "ACTING" and that's exactly what it is. Don't believe everything you see or hear. If ghosts were that bad you would be hearing about and reading things left and right. No worries. Educate yourself on them more and also realize that houses settle and creak. Houses dry out during the winter from the heat and creak. These are probably what are scaring you. Gee. You see dogs on tv that tear people apart but I don't hear you being afraid of dogs. People shoot and kill other people and I don't hear you being afraid of them. So why would you fear something that you don't even know is real? That is kind of a logical explanation. See? It'll be fine. You'll see.

Well if it helps, stop watching ghost movies. As to help your fear, look up on the internet or the library about ghosts. You will not be able to find any 'documented' ghost that has harmed a person. That is all fiction, and many people believe ghosts themselves are fiction (a large majority of people). Being afraid of something that you KNOW can't hurt you and you don't have any proof that it actually exists is dumb, just think about it. Find out the facts and your fears will go away.

If ghosts exist (unlikely) then they have to follow the laws of physics to be able to do any harm to you - i.e, if it can hit you, you can smack the bast@rd back just like anyone else. If, on the other hand, all the bollox about ghosts being able to pass through walls etc. was actually true, it wouldn't be able to touch you - or anything else (so it couldn't throw stuff at you either).

Either way, there's not much to be scared of, except big hard, heavily armed ghosts capable of touching you - and that's just the same as a person, really.

Well, ok. Somebody says they are real. If you get scared, just remember. If the ghosts are real now, then they have been all your life. They have never bothered you before, so why would they start to now?
When I was 14 I had big yukky scary problems too. I lived. All those supernatural things that were so scary then never ever bothered me. To quote some other old person, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. "

The ghost you see in the grudge or ring are nasty. Most ghosts just want to be left alone. General rule: leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Darkness is nothing to be afraid of. And leaving the light on at night might disturb your sleep patterns which will do more harm than any ghost!

STOP, sleeping with your light on! That is the worst thing you can do; because, if you sleep with you light on, you will get caught between sleep and wakefulness. Basically you will slowly drift off to sleep, but end up sleeping with your eyes open. If you ever fall asleep with your eyes open you will see strange and scary things. Sometimes you will see shapeless individuals sitting or standing next to you. When you see them, your instinct will be to jump out of bed, but you will not be able to move; because, your body will be asleep. It is a terrifying experience and it can be avoided by turning of your light. Sleep tight.

Why on earth do you waste your time with people who say that gosts are real?

I imagine that their difficulty in getting a grip on reality is because of their age (immaturity) we all had an imagination at a young age but you should be growing out of it soon.

If they are adults then they suffer from neuroses and need professional help.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT (ESPECIALLY AT YOUR AGE) NOT TO SLEEP WITH THE LIGHT ON REGULARLY AS IT IS VERY BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH OVER THE LONG TERM.

My advice is not to waste your time with people who insist that ghosts exist, a group of people together talking about such things often causes a kind of mass histeria where even grounded ,logical people can feel anxiety.

Dont drink coffee at night and dont take stimulants of any kind, dont waste your time with ghost/horror stories or films for a few years at least.

Age 14 years is difficult enough time anyway with all the problems of becoming an adult and relationships.

True there can for some people be a little excitement in being a little scared (but only for a very short time) if this is the case , do something like going on a rollercoaster. For some, ghost stories are just another form of entertainment (and thats all it should be ) either to make them laugh a little or a little bit scared if thats how they like their excitement.
At this point in time it is not for you as you are beyond entertainment and it sounds like you are fearful.
If your fears are causing you loss of sleep then it is clearly causing you a lot of stress and that is very bad for your health.

Speak to 3 or 4 responsible educated adults about your current feelings of anxiety. Let them know also that it is no Joke and that you are suffering anxiety with the light on at night. You will feel more assured.
Speak to your parents about it (unless they believe in ghosts too)
try leaving your door open or even sleeping in close proximity to a family member to get used to sleeping with the light off again.
I dont think your problem will go on for long but in the very unlikely event that it does, please explain to your doctor.

Spend your time with sensible and if possible scientific people.

The more time you spend with "grounded" people in the day, the less problem you are likely to have at night.

Dont eat or drink tea or coffee at night (or at all while you have this problem), try something soothing like camomile tea, and try meditation to relax - it works.

Remember something, why are you only scared at night ?
Do you imagine that ghosts sleep during the day?
You are now conditioned to feel fear at night and your light switch is your way of being in control of that fear. Truth is that light on or off, there are no ghosts, you know that.
Try getting used to turning off the light for short periods at first to give yourself confidence and then gradually leave it off for longer periods each time and reward yourself for doing so.Use a watch or clock to set yourself longer targets.
Tell yourself well done each time eventually you will not need the light on anymore and will naturally fall asleep.
It may take 1 or 2 nights (or even longer to achieve this) but you will succeed. Stay positive and you are in control.
Famous words : The only thing to fear is fear itself!

Best wishes and remember to sleep well , enjoy your dream sleep and awake feeling nourished and very happy the next day.
Leave the bad (nervous) energy out of your life and fill it with love and positive energy, you will be happier for it. Sweet dreams.
