Why are they sometimes called the Knickerbockers? What is a Knickberboker

I got a laugh out of this question when I first read it. Well, a knickerboker is a very "cool" hip-hop word that I can't attach meaning to. Sorry.

Looks like Knick is just short for Knickerbocker. A Knickerbocker is a term for a person from New York. Thinking about it, I guess it would be odd to be known as the New York New Yorkers, hence the New York Knicks name instead.
