What percentage of Americans understand that plastics, medicines, fertilizers and certain food items come from a barrel of oil?

Given that there are numerous ways to generate energy, doesn't it seem like quite a waste of material to essentially "burn" the barrel of oil to generate energy? At some point people will have to decide what to do with the limited amount of oil we have - that decision being to either burn it or using it as a building block for consumer products such as plastics and medicines.

I just wonder how many Americans think about these not-so-silly matters.

Danagasta - the vast, vast majority of plastics, medicines and fertilizers in use around the world eminate from petrochemicals. Sure, there are some natural polymers and medicines...but that wasn't the point of my question...

Depends on the type of fertilizers, plastics and medicines. There are natural polymers (such as keratin---think leather), medicines (old-school herbs) and compost.
