an individual does not need sex to survive, but a group (or species, if you will) does.
But I do think that as far as our body is concerned--it is a need. We need to pass on our genes, so that our genes will survive.

I would think so. Denying this side of your nature would be akin to denying any part of your nature. Put it this way: If someone grows up without any physical contact whatsoever (hugs etc..) or mental/emotional stimulation and interaction then this will be both a cause and consequence of mental illness. Think about the disabled Romanian children in institutional settings - they are severely neglected which results in psychological disorders.
Imagine a gifted child who is put in an ordinary school environment with little to no mental stimulation. His/her brain is not being fed, therefore it's going to cause eventual depression and anxiety.
We as humans require sustenance from many facets of life in order to stay physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. And, as adults, sex is a healthy sustaining life force.
As for those who are celibate like monks etc..., well they spend most of their time disciplining thier minds and overcomming what they preiceve as unecessary desires and needs. The way I see it they are not participating fully in life and are focusing on only one or two aspects of their character while repressing the rest.
Ok, so that was long winded. In conclusion, yes, I believe sex is a basic human need amongst healthy adults.

Sex is a built in instinct. All species are "programmed" to procreate, no matter what. However, humans are the only ones who lust. Women eventually tire of sex itself (some sooner than others), but when they get around other women's babies, they want to have a baby, too. Men are blessed with a strong sex drive right up to the end. We were made that way on purpose.

Define "basic human need". There is a difference between desire and need. Physiologically, we have a sex drive to aid our specie to survive; but, of course, there's also a non-reproductive sexual desire which is vital and central to the whole psychic apparatus. So sex is both things: a desire and, yes, a need. The other basic drive would be aggression...

sex isn't a basic human need.
but a basic need for humanity.
We NEED sex to continue the human chain.
If everyone never had sex, then we won't have children.
Humans will not exist until apes or monkeys evolve (which is just a matter of time)

Not exactly. I believe sex is something which must be mastered. One has to be able to contrtol his or her sexual desires using their free will. To say that sex is a basic human need, like air and water, would be like lowering ourselves to the level of animals.

It is a basic impulse or instinct. One does not need to have sex in order to surive personally or to be happy. But it is as much an impulse as the desire for food or drink, impulses which we must satisfy in order to live.
