They came to America to be free for religious reasons. Many believed in God and England wanted their people to believe in what England wanted them to believe in.

To escape religious persecution. They believed that every part of a person's life should be dedicated to God and Jesus. Therefore they wore very dark colors and the women covered their hair, unfortunately there was very little joy in this life because no matter how hard they tried they could never measure up.

In the simplest of terms, for a chance to start over again in a new and unspoiled land. Freedom of religion is often touted but economic and personal betterment trumped religion.

They were dissenters--didn't believe in the established Church of England. Some of them went to Holland for a while, where they had freedom of religion--but they didn't like their kids growing up speaking Dutch, they still wanted to be English.
