A polar bear's fur isn't white. Its actually transparent, and it only looks white. The fluff underneath the fur is black. The black fluff absorbs the heat from the sun that passes through the transparent fur. The reason why the fur isn't black is for camoflauge when they are hunting. Therefore the bears get heat and are camoflauged in the process.

It's actually clear. The light reflecting off of it makes it look white. Most light passes through the fur to the skin (polar bears actually have black skin) so it helps keep them warm.

Contrary to popular belief, polar bear fur is actually white to allow greater amounts of sunlight and heat to reach their skin, which is black to absorb that heat. This heat transfer is necessary because of the polar bear's habitat.
