It can actually mean a lot of things. It's the one word I can think of that can have so many different meanings......you can look at someone after something crazy happens and say "Dude!" and it could mean - Did you see that? and they will sayd "Duuuudddeee!" and that would mean - yeah, can you believe that? And then the guy could reply saying "dude" shaking his head. - meaning that was crazy..........I can go on all day Dude....lol It's all in how you say it. But before Dude guys used to call each other Brah - short for Bother. It's must another nick name/slang term.

Good question, probably like a term made up by some kids, and the name just stuck. I think 'dude' is usually when talking about males, and 'dudettes' are usually when talking about females. That's about all I know.

a hired hand on a ranch. Not a very good one either. Hence the term dude ranch.

I understood dude to refer to a horse used to stud out for breeding purposes, like a stallion.

I just found out that to diffrent people it means diffrent things .I always took it to mean hey guy,or wow what a bad a-- looking guy.But to my boyfriend(who is from Montana) he hates it and says it means a cowboy at a dude ranch who tryes to milk a stear.Hahahah
