Personally, I take a break and take my mind off of the subject. Soon enough, I find the solution to my block. Good luck, fellow writer!

There are three main activities that I usually end up doing of I get a bout of writer's block. The first is to just write anyway. No matter what it is, just write. Analyse or interpret something. Write a descriptive paragraph, anything.

The second option is to read. Once again, pick up anything, a magazine or book, it doesn't matter. By reading other people's ideas, it can often prompt your own.

Third and final is just to avoid the writing world completely! Take a break and do something you wouldn't normally do. Explore an area you have never been before, go and cook something you've never even considered before, even go online and play a few games! The break will do your problem the world of good and before you know it, and when you least expect it, the ideas will slowly, but surely, come trickling back.

Works every time for me, hope you find it useful!

I read some other answers you received here to this question. I have written several short stories and a couple of books, I have had writers block a few times and what I had to do is stop writing and take a break, I like to go on an adventure and then my block is lifted.

Freewrite or read. If you read while thinking, an idea may enter your head. You could, in theory, take a walk and get some fresh air, but there's no guarantee.
The 100% way is to write. Start with: "I can't think of anything to write." Keep writing that until your mind says "nuts to this, let's write something else," at which point you'll write, "this writer's block is terrible. I hate it." and on and on. Eventually something will happen, even if it is just a small metaphor, simile, image, or word that prompts further investigation. Go with that prompting and don't look back.

For me, I read someone else's work in draft form, some friend of mine, not a published author. When I turn on the critic, juices start flowing. I get the itch to go home and tell a story.

When I'm really stumped, can't get anything out, despise my office, can't read another damn 'script, I tell a story over. I find a myth, folktale, or fairy tale, and I do it my way. All the bones are already there: character, setting, plot--now it's told through my vision. I never have plans to do anything with them: the goal is not to publish, but just to write. Sometimes we writers get ahead of ourselves with our own ambition, and this can cause block, too.

Be careful with "taking a break." Sometimes you just never get back to it. Writing is work--you should enjoy it sometimes, sweat blood at others, and often you just need a smoke break.

for hardxcore writer's block that won't go away despite all efforts, i watch movies, go somewhere (with a notebook), immerse myself in humanity, and if all else fails, go out to a park or a field or even your driveway and do something cathartic. scream at the sky or at the old man next door as he rakes leaves onto your lawn, pile up your old yucky drafts and burn them with some firewood, then cook a marshmallow or a hot dog on them. serious writer's block is cause for serious action, so do whatever you can to inspire yourself short of breaking the law (unless you're inclined to have fun that way, in which case go ahead).

I usually just take a break and listen to music, music is such a big inspiration for me for writing, and usually after a few minutes I'm urging to write again. Or take a walk to clear your head, fresh air does everyone good =)

write.
write anything...write a rhyme about the worst vegetable
Write what life would be like if knees bent the other way
Write what you would do if you were the other sex for a day.

Just write...it's what a writer does

Take a break and focus on something else for awhile. Then come back to what you're doing.

Read read and read.
