I have a 2005 kfx400 and I can't tell if the frame is made of chromoly or just mild steel. I was wondering if any one knew any way of telling this by looking at it. Like what is the visual properties of chromoly vs mild steel. Thank you in advance for any help I may recieve.

Some people seem to have chromoly and chrome plating confused. Chromoly does not usually have a mirror finish. Generally, you will not be able to tell by looking at it whether the steel is chromoly or a different steel alloy.

Although mild steel will rust a lot faster, it is very hard to tell just by eye. A spark test is much more reliable.

Aluminium is light and oxidises white. Steel is heavy and rusts, galvanised steel is crystaline in appearance and the galvanisation tends to peel at the edges.
