the NBA started in 1950, before that it was the BAA. Here are the teams that were around in 1950

if you go to:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/
then click on "Leagues"... you'll get a list of year by year leagues, including NBA, ABA and BAA.
Go down to the bottom of the list and click on BAA for 1947, and the link will give you final standings and playoff results, team stats, league leaders, etc.
You can do the same for any other year or league. It's the best basketball statistical reference online.
